H.O.W. (Honest, Open, Willing) is a personal recovery companion app: a private space to check in daily, reflect, track your progress, and — if you choose — stay connected with one trusted accountability partner. By using H.O.W., you agree to the terms below, written to reflect exactly how the app actually works.
You must be at least 18 years old to use H.O.W.
H.O.W. is a self-directed personal tool, not a substitute for professional treatment, therapy, medical advice, or a formal recovery program. If you're in crisis or need immediate support, please contact a qualified professional or crisis service directly — this app is not equipped for that.
H.O.W. lets you connect with one or more people you trust using a private shareable code. A connection only becomes active once the other person explicitly accepts your request — nobody can see your check-ins or read anything of yours just by having your code.
Once connected, your partner can see that you checked in on a given day. There is no chat or messaging feature in H.O.W. — the app is meant to support real conversations, not replace them.
If you subscribe to Share, you can additionally choose to let a connected partner read a specific journal entry — a jumping-off point for that real conversation. Sharing is always your explicit choice, one entry at a time; nothing is shared automatically, and your mood and goals are never visible to a partner under any circumstance.
The partner-connection feature exists to support real accountability relationships. You may not use it to:
Everything you write in H.O.W. — your mood, journal, and goals — is private to you by default, stored only on your device, and never screened or reviewed by anyone since it never reaches our servers. If you subscribe and choose to share a specific journal entry with a partner, that one entry is visible only to the two of you — still not publicly shown, so it isn't automatically screened either. If you experience harassment or abuse through a partner connection, please contact us (see below) and describe what happened — we don't currently have an automated reporting flow, but we take direct reports seriously.
Sharing a journal entry with a partner, and generating a text summary of your progress to copy or send elsewhere, are both part of the paid Share feature, currently $3/month, billed and processed by Stripe. You can cancel anytime through the in-app "Manage subscription" link, which takes you to Stripe's own account portal. Canceling stops future billing; you keep access through the end of the period you already paid for. You can always delete or "unshare" an entry you previously shared, regardless of subscription status.
H.O.W. doesn't use accounts, passwords, or logins — your identity in the app is tied to your device/browser. This means there's no "forgot password" recovery: if you clear your browser data or switch devices, you lose access to your mood, journal, goals, sobriety date, check-in history, and partner connections, and a new install starts fresh. You can also permanently delete everything yourself at any time from the Partners tab. See the Privacy Policy for full details on what's stored where.
H.O.W. is provided "as is," as an independent project, without warranty of any kind. We don't guarantee the app will always be available or error-free.
These terms may be updated as the app changes. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
